Kill Phil: The Fast Track to Success in No-Limit Hold 'em Poker Tournaments – Blair Rodman, Lee Nelson, Steven Heston & Phil Hellmuth Jr
Kill Phil is promoted as the definitive guide to no-limit poker tournaments, with the premise being you can read this book and destroy some of the greatest poker players of all time “The Phil's” think Phil Hellmuth and Phil Ivey.
To break down this book a little further it focuses on super aggressive play with a strategy highly dependent on pushing all-in at various stages of a tournament to avoid slowly losing your chip stack to more experienced players in smaller hands.
The initial strategy in Kill Phil is very mathematical, and focuses mostly on post-flop play with decisions made relative your stack size, the blinds and antes. To help you refine and put the Kill Phil strategy into practice the book provides some great reference tables and charts that you can use whilst playing. Noting the revised and expanded edition of Kill Phil comes with the addition of strategy cards which are of great values when trying to learn the basics.
Whilst the strategy promoted in this book can indeed work, it is definitely aimed at players who are at a beginner to immediate level. That being said more advanced players can still find some good value and get some great tips to improve their tournament end games.
With Kill Phil being written in 2005, one must question does its content still hold true today? In short yes, however don’t expect to be taking down the professionals after finishing a few short chapters and signing up for your first poker tournament.
